Bursting their bags on our heads
you give and give too much
like summer days limp with heat
thunderstorms as we salt and pickle and freeze
Give to your red cross
beg on the highroads please,
take my zucchini
zucchini tempura, creamed soup,
sautéed with olive oil and cumin
baked, marinated
Get rid of old friends, they too have gardens and full trucks
Look for newcomers, befriend them in the post office
And thus the people did sacrifice themselves
to the long green phallic god
and eat and eat and eat and eat
they’re coming
they’re on us
the silky babies
the lumpy vast adults
look for newcomers
unload on them and run
